454 TBI AND 4L80E SWAP

Hello I am new to this site and I need some help with a TBI swap I am planning. I have a 454TBI engine and 4L80E transmissio from a 1991 v2500 Suburban. I have all the wiring and the ecm which is 16147060. I have done efi swaps on fords so I am familiar with wiring and fuel system setups. My question is the 4l80e transmission i have was slipping between 1st and 2nd gears so i was wondering if i could use a 4l60e transmission in place of the 4l80e. I realize this is a lighter duty transmission but in my application that will not matter. will this ecm work with the 4l60e or is there a different pcm I could use. I have found a lot of excellent information on this site and I would appreciate any suggestions you cold offer. Thanks

The problem is that the 7060 ECM code doesn't seem to support a 4l60E. At least none of the BCC's are for a 60e. If you are good at programming, you might make it work. It would probably be easier to run an ECM capable of running $0D or $0E code (7427) or just fixing the 4l80E (the 4L60 probably won't last behind the 454 anyways).

If you get your tires to connect solid, the 4L60-E will not last. Then you are left with a trans overhaul anyway. The least costly is to overhaul the L80. Jim is right!! The L60 fails with a 305 behind it.

No reason to spend a nickel on a 4l60E if you have an 80E that can be fixed...

Thanks for all the help i have 2 4l60e transmissions so ther woulb be no cost involved there but it still sounds like it would be better to overhaul the 4l80e. thanks for the help

I picked up a ~100K mile 4L80E from a national auto recycler chain for $600.00 + tax and it came with a 6 months parts warranty. I would consider a good used unit before going with an overhaul. Might save you some $$$ My stock 350 destoryed the stock 4L60E in under 40K miles and after it was cammed and tuned killed the 4L65E spec replacement with aftermarket clutches before I hit 85K.

Now Fast355, let's not talk bad about the 4L60E. I build them for a living and have no problems holding up into the 500hp range, with the proper mods of course. But I also don't disagree that the 4L80E is a far better trans from a durability standpoint, it's designed to be that way. With that being said, the 4L60E is great for light vehicles but not so much for trucks that haul, ass or otherwise, with any power output over 400hp. Unless you want to drop $2k on a trans. Which I don't. :)

Well keep in mind GM engineers felt they were inadequate for heavier vehicles, the 1-ton vans got the 4L80E even with the 4.3 in them. That being said I broke a 4L60E case well under 500 HP in a heavy vehicle that had good traction and close to 500 ft/lbs.

Im in agreement with you on the 4L80E Fast. 188Ford lemme know if u wanna overhaul it yourself i can walk you through it. They arent hard but do have a few items that need attention.
