Bought a car hauler, got a Fbomb

There are challenges with erasing and burning chips. The original '7730 chips are 12.5 volts. I'm embarrassed to ask, you know how to correctly identify pin 1 on a 28 pin chip? If your using a 27SF512 chip, it needs to programmed with an offset. The original '7730 chip is 32K, the 27SF512 is 64K.

Don't be embarrassed. I'm an IT project manager, we are literally designed to both ask stupid questions and give stupid answers.

Now we're getting somewhere. I vaguely remember reading that now that you mention it - but honestly I've read so much in the last two weeks, I bet I couldn't successfully program a coffee pot to turn on at the moment.
OK. Pin 1 is in the same spot as cylinder 1, if the notch on the chip is the water pump - right?
And I think you're telling me the chip is loaded FILO, and I have to start at the 32k mark and load middle to back?
So should I be starting in 000020?

Edit: I'm programming 256b chips - that should be 32k.

Yep, so all that is right. re-burned a second chip, checksum ok, installed, same thing. Misfire, won't rev, won't idle, won't stay running, but no SES.
It will run OK on the original memcal, won't run at all on anything I've burned.

and everything i'm reading says these chips are 5v only.
So - what chip should I buy?
I can't imagine 5 different .bin files all run the thing the exact same way - when everybody else is using them. So that usually only leaves user error.

Interesting information, "runs OK with Original Memcal".

I have the equipment to erase and reprogram Original Memcals. I've been thinking you have similar capabilities to erase and reprogram Original Memcals?
