    Hello, Newbie from Oregon

I picked up an awesome 1994 Chevy, 5.7L, 5 speed manual, C2500 truck.

I'm really loving this truck --only problem is that it failed the emissions test for HC. It does smell a little rich --but there are no CEL codes and my OBD2 scanner won't read live data (and this is OBD1). I'm hoping I can learn from your forum --how to work on EFI/TBI with OBD1 and not only fix the emission problem but also increase engine performance.

    Thanks!

TunerPro RT is a good option for OBD1

    g00se,

People like RedDevilRiver make ALDL (OBD1 for GM) to USB/Bluetooth that are compatible with TunerPro RT. I've used it myself and it has helped me with a lot of my problems. You just need to figure out if you need the GM 12-pin or the GM 16-pin.

    Hope this helps!

Hi Guys! Okay good news --I finally got an ALDL cable and have downloaded the TunerPro software. Right now, I just want to be able to see the live data --so I downloaded the Datastream Definition---which I think should be "A217_0D_v250.adx" --does that look right to you? My truck has a manual so I'm guessing the other two options are for an automatic? They just include Trans1 and Trans2 in the adx filename.

Do I need the Bin file too? Would it be safer to check the ECM to make sure it has 16197427 on it?
Sorry for the newbie questions! I've done some reading but honestly it is way over my head to understand it all.. :-)

I just pulled my glove box and found this --there are two 161's listed.

Thanks Dave! I really appreciate it! I searched for the 16196396 BDTP and wasn't able to find anything. I will give it a try!

Thanks again for all the help! I got it working today --but admittedly, there is a lot there to understand.
My trucks issue is that it is failing for high HC

Here are a couple screen shots of it cold after start up -and hot after warming up. Does this look right to you? Could anything you see cause high HC?

Information link for high HC causes: https://www.smogtips.com/failed-high...carbons-HC.cfm

I recommend starting with a compression test first, it's a low cost test and will help verify the engine is OK. Checking / reading the spark plugs during the compression test is a good plan. Maybe have a new set of plugs ready to install after the compression test is a good plan too.
