This, in a sentence (several actually) is a great synopsis on why I refuse to run anything other than linux on my bare metal. When I plug a usb>rs232 device in, and there are no others connected it's always created in the device tree as /dev/ttyUSB0 regardless of what USB port it's connected to, etc. VirtualBox is your friend when you "need" to run something on Winblows.
